Net Weight Fillers | Net Weight Filling Equipment
Net weight filling equipment is the only filling method
that actually weighs product prior to dispensing into the
packaging container. Net weight fillers can be utilized for a
wide array of purposes including counting, filling a wide
array of regular and irregular sized products, and for dry or
slightly moist products. Net weight filling systems can also be set up
in several formats for very gentle handling of product with
the use of mulitiple vibratory feed trays also known as
cascading feeders (very popular for chips and other delicate
and hard to feed products). Examples of net weight filling applications
include:

All of these fillers can be used semi-automatically, or
integrated into automatic lines or baggers. These systems are
pre-programed to be used either way. All of the systems are
graduated to 1 gram readout. the controller featrues a
self calibration mode, and easy to use learning mode that
automatically optimizes all settings. Store up to 99
products into memory for easy recall. Four models to choose

Information:
The Model S-4 weigh/fill system shares many of
the same basic characteristics of the S-5. By
using a weigh hopper that drops the entire
weighment at once and an electro magnetic
vibrator, the S-4 can be up to twice as fast
as the S-5, and have greater accuracy at
higher speeds and lower net weights.
Example: To run a
relatively free-flowing product into a 1lb.
package, the product is loaded into the
hopper, and the total weight is set at 1lb.
After starting the first fill cycle with the
foot pedal, the controller will automatically
switch into "learn mode" for the first cycle.
During this time the controller tests the flow
characteristics of the product and decides the
best speeds and durations for bulk and
dribble. The controller will automatically
change the vibratory feed from bulk to dribble
and stop the scale at 1lb. The bag is removed
and sealed. Each successive container is now
filled by placing it under the funnel and
depressing the foot pedal.

S-5 Bulk Weight Filler for Bags and Boxes up to 75 pounds
The S-5 Bulk Weight filler works a little differently than
the other net weight fillers on this page. It is
designed for filling boxes or bags up to 75 pounds and starts
each fill cycle by taring out the box before starting product
feed. In this case the box sits on top of the scale
where the box is acting as the weigh bucket directly.

Information:
The very accurate and easy to operate Model S-5
semi-automatic scale has automatic tare, automatic
feed and speed controls for both bulk and dribble feed
rates, and automatic set points. The product flow from
the hopper to the feed pan can also be controlled by
an adjustable slide gate.
Example: To run a relatively
free-flowing product into a 10lb. package, the product
is loaded into the hopper, and the target weight is
set at 10lb. The package is placed on top of the
scale, and the table is adjusted (up/down) so that the
funnel is inside the bag in order to keep the bag
“standing” when empty. After starting the first fill
cycle with the foot pedal, the controller will
automatically switch into “learn mode” for the first
cycle. During this time the controller tests the flow
characteristics of the product and decides the best
speeds and durations for bulk and dribble. The
controller will automatically change the vibratory
feed from bulk to dribble and stop the scale at 10lb.
The bag is removed and sealed. Each successive
container is now filled by placing it under the funnel
and depressing the foot pedal.
All product contact surfaces are stainless steel and
easily disassembled: two screw knobs hold the funnel,
two screw knobs hold the vibratory feed, four nuts
hold the hopper. If needed, the scale and control
panel can be removed from the table, and the table can
be removed from the frame.

S-6 Cascading Style Net Weight Filling System
The S-6 net weight filler is a great machine for
applications that require more accuracy for weighing or
counting. The second pan is normally set up to a faster speed
than the first so that a thinner layer (or more spacing on
parts) is achieved which allows the dribble feed to be more
accurate. Adding a dribble feed gate to the system can
create even more accuracy when needed. This system is also
ideal for hard to feed products like chips.

S-7 Two Head Net Weight Filling System
The two head S-7 weigh filler can be used in three separate
modes: Simultaneous Mode where both scales fill and dump at
the same time to double weighing speeds; Individual Mode where
the the scales operate indepedently and alternate dumps for
another way to double up speeds, great for automation to 25
fills per minute; or Mix Mode (requires divided hopper option)
where two different products with different, or the same,
weights can dump together to mix the components into a common
package.

Information:
The model S-7 two lane net weigher
share many of the same basic characteristics of the
S-4. A very accurate and easy to use
controllerI allows for three different
modes of operation. In simultaneous dump the machine
fills both weigh hoppers at the same time, allowing
for twice as much product flow as our S-4. In
individual dump the machine dumps whichever weigh
hopper is at weight. This gives twice the speed of our
S-4 machine. Finally the model S-7 can mix products.
The
controller
can be set to weigh two completely different products
at different weights to easily mix products into a
container.

Application Guide for Net Weight
Filling
Step 1 - Determine the
volume of your fill
The first step in determining which
of our net weight fillers is best for you application
is to determine the weights you wish to fill, the
containers you wish to fill into, and the
volume of the fill. All products have
different densities so this is very important!
5lbs of rice is a different density than flour or
raisens. You will need to determine that in cubic
inches (cu.in.).
(These calculations are not needed
for the S-5 Bulk Weigh Filler).
For rectangular products multiply
Length x Width x Height in inches.
Example 1: Filling into a box 4" x
2" x 8.5" = 68 cubic inches
Example 2: For cylindrical
containers the calculation is:
3.14 x radius squared (radius is 1/2
diameter) x Height
Example: A can 8" diameter, with 10"
height =
3.14 x 4 x 4 x 10= 502.4 cubic
inches
We now know the size that the weigh bucket needs to
be.
Example 1 above will easily fit the standard weigh
scale for the S-4 which is 250 cu.in.
Example 2 will require the upgrade to the 650
cu.in. weigh hopper.
So if you are only filling productus under 250
cu.in. the standard will be fine. But if one or more
products require over 250 cu.in., so long as none
exceeds 650 cu. in., then the upgrade will be
required.
Step 2 - Determine Production Requirements
Typically most products will run about 10 cycles or
more per minute per scale (S-5 about half of that)
with good accuracy. But there is no hard and fast rule
for speeds as products have size, cost, and flow
differences, and your accuracy requirements may be
more stringent than are "typical". The S-7 has two
scales so speed can be doubled over that of the S-4!
When we are discussing speeds there are other
factors that "weigh in" that are beyond the weighing
system's mechanical aspects. For instance
visualize a quart sized bottle with a 28 mm neck
opening running a no quite so free flowing a product
such as flour. Even though the weigh scale may be able
to mearsure out the correct weight into the scale
bucket at 10 cycles per minute, the restriction of
flow due to the small neck opening can be so great
that the flour would flow into the bottle through the
funnels after dump so slowly that speed may be very
restricted due to that factor alone. But switching to
a wide mouth opening to the bottle would allow for
much faster filling.
Still most free flowing products will run easily at
about 10 cycles or more per minute or 600-800 cycles
per hour, which is about the maximum rate that can be
handled by an operator in semi-automatic mode. For
extreme accuracy the rates could easily be half of the
rate, in which case going with the two head S-7 weigh
filler might be a good option, even in semi-automatic
mode so as to get the rate back up to 600-800 cycles
per hour.
For automated systems that can produce up to 1600
cycles per hour we highly recommend the S-7 two scale
net weight filler.
Step 3 Determine the Accuracy Requirement
All of our scales can weigh down to 1 gram
accuracy. But just because the scales are very
accurate does not mean that your fill will be that
accurate. For instance envision a 2 lb bag of doggie
bones where each bone weighs 1 oz. Running on an S-4
on the fast feed can load the bucket pretty quickly
and let's say the fast feed cuts off at 1lb 12 oz
before going into dribble feed mode. Depending on the
height of the flow gate on the main hopper there may
be as many as 5 to 8 bones that are nearly ready to
drop into the scale. In this scenario we may end up
with a fill of 2 pounds 4 oz. One way we can mitigate
that is to add a dribble feed gate that allows only a
narrow band of product to flow in, more or less
dropping in one at a time until weight is made. Even
so in a state where we have 1.99 pounds, if only one
more piece drops in we will be overweight by almost 1
ounce. In other words, no scale system can fill more
accurately than the heaviest particle or part in the
batch.
But for ultimate accuracy the S-6 cascading style
net weight filler is the answer for parts counting or
the doggie bone above, or odd sized - hard to feed
products like potato chips.
This is because there are two vibrating trays, the
first set at the same speed as above in the doggie
bone discussion, but the second tray is set to a
faster speed to allow product to spread out to a
thinner more manageable level, while allowing the same
overall feed rate. So now when the scale system drops
into dribble mode, there may only be one or two bones
ready to drop into the scale. Add in the dribble
feed gate and you have the most accuracy available.
